What Is Iron and Why Is It Important?

The Role of Iron in the Body

Iron is a vital mineral that helps your body produce haemoglobin—a protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. Without enough iron, your body can’t function properly, and you may begin to feel tired, weak, and unwell.

Signs of Low Iron

Iron deficiency or anaemia can cause a range of symptoms including fatigue, shortness of breath, pale skin, dizziness, and even difficulty concentrating. Some people also notice hair thinning or brittle nails.

Why IV Iron May Be Needed

While iron can often be boosted through food or supplements, some individuals struggle with absorption or experience side effects from oral tablets. In these cases, an IV iron infusion offers a safe, fast, and effective alternative—delivering iron directly into your bloodstream for rapid correction and long-lasting relief from symptoms.

Who Can Benefit from IV Iron Infusion?

IV iron may be recommended for individuals experiencing chronic fatigue or those who have been diagnosed with anaemia, especially when symptoms are persistent or affecting daily life. It can also be beneficial for women with heavy menstrual bleeding, which often leads to depleted iron levels over time.

Patients with malabsorption issues, such as those with coeliac disease or inflammatory bowel conditions (IBD), may struggle to absorb iron through the gut and are often ideal candidates for intravenous treatment.

IV iron is also commonly used for pre- or post-operative patients who need to restore iron levels quickly to support healing and recovery. Additionally, it is a valuable solution for individuals who do not respond well to or cannot tolerate oral iron supplements due to gastrointestinal side effects.t

Symptoms of
Iron Deficiency

Iron deficiency can affect your energy levels, physical health, and mental clarity. Symptoms often develop gradually and may be overlooked at first, but they can significantly impact your daily life when left untreated.

Common signs include persistent fatigue, pale or dull skin, and a feeling of being constantly tired or drained. You may also experience shortness of breath, dizziness, or lightheadedness, even with minimal exertion.

Other symptoms can include headaches, cold hands and feet, rapid heartbeat, difficulty concentrating, and brittle nails. Some individuals may also notice hair thinning or develop unusual cravings, such as for ice or non-food items—a condition known as pica.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it may be time to check your iron levels and explore suitable treatment options such as IV iron therapy.

How Do We Get Iron and How Is It Regulated?

We get iron through food—mainly from red meat, poultry, fish, leafy greens, beans, and fortified cereals. Iron from animal sources is absorbed more easily than from plants.

The body naturally adjusts how much iron it absorbs based on your needs. When levels are low, absorption increases; when levels are high, it decreases.

However, some people struggle to absorb enough iron due to health conditions, blood loss, or increased demand (such as during pregnancy). In these cases, IV iron infusion can provide faster, more effective replenishment than diet or tablets alone.
